Global Health: Almost a halving of child mortality

Melinda Gates spoke a few months back at TED about the regulation of child conception around the world. Birthcontrol indeed, in all its forms, has helped bring down child mortality to almost half the extent since 2005.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), child mortality in 20 African countries has gone down by approximately 8% since 2005, which means that we hopefully reach a halvation of child mortality by 2015. In Kenya, for instance, it has fallen by 7.6% per year!

According to the abstract of the report, three elements in particular have contributed to combatting child mortality:

  1. anti-malaria bednets
  2. water and sanitation measures
  3. overall economic development

This is some astonishing data, and the full report is found here: http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2050847

I have not read the full report, to be honest (over 40 pages), but this is really something to bring with you if you want to be, are or have been engaged in global health.

The article I found this news on is a Swedish one from the paper Dagens Nyheterhttp://www.dn.se/blogg/framstegsbloggen/2012/05/22/rekordsnabb-minskning-av-barnadodlighet/?a=
